VCO hailed as a cure for Alzheimers
By Cesar C. Villariba in Manila/Philippine Daily Inquirer | Asia News Network –  Aug 28, 2011

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - After previous claims as an antiseptic, AIDS cure, anti-infective, cholesterol-basher, and remedy for various aches and pains, coconut oil is now being hailed as a possible miracle cure for Alzheimer's.

Dr. Bruce Fife presented his evidence at the ongoing 10th Coconut Festival in Mandaluyong City, relating the remarkable recovery of Steve Newport, 58, from five years of progressive dementia after just 35 days of taking virgin coconut oil (VCO).

According to Fife, Newport's tests have dispelled the notion that VCO will increase cholesterol and in fact his cholesterol levels have actually improved with the good cholesterol (HDL) going up and the bad cholesterol (LDL) going down.

In 18 months, Newport's severe dementia was totally arrested. He scored high enough in the MMSE tests to be considered to be in the mild range of Alzheimer's.

Tale of hope, persistence
Inspired by her husband's recovery, Dr. Mary Newport travels all over the United States telling her story of hope and persistence. She encourages the medical scientific community to keep on with their research into the use of medium-chain tryglycerides (MCT) as a therapeutic aid in treating Alzheimer's, as well as Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and other neurodegenerative disorders.

Fife explained that drugs become ineffective after some time and virgin coconut oil, converted into ketones, decrease the formation of free radicals that damage the cells. Hence, coconut oil is especially important for those taking medications.

Brain food
He said if any food could be labeled as brain food it would be virgin coconut oil.

According to Fife, coconut oil, converted into ketones, acts as a superfuel to the brain and normalizes brain function, stops the erratic signal transmissions that leads to seizures, and improves cognition and memory.

The MCTs in coconut oil are converted into ketones, which act as high-potency fuel for the brain. The ketone MCTs provide energy to the brain and stimulate healing and repair, he said. The chemical structure of the MCTs and fatty acids in coconut oil enable them to pass through the blood-brain barrier, which ordinary food or oil cannot break into, he said.

 UCLA on Alzheimer's

"The idea that Alzheimer's is entirely genetic and unpreventable is perhaps the greatest misconception about the disease," says Gary Small, M.D., director of the UCLA Center on Aging. Researchers now know that Alzheimer's, like heart disease and cancer, develops over decades and can be influenced by lifestyle factors including cholesterol, blood pressure, obesity, depression, education, nutrition, sleep and mental, physical and social activity.

The big news: Mountains of research reveals that simple things you do every day might cut your odds of losing your mind to Alzheimer's. In search of scientific ways to delay and outlive Alzheimer's and other dementias, here is one strategy I found most surprising:  Grow new brain cells. Impossible, scientists used to say. Now it's believed that thousands of brain cells are born daily. The trick is to keep the newborns alive by aerobic exercise (such as a brisk 30-minute walk every day), strenuous mental activity, eating salmon and other fatty fish, avoiding obesity, chronic stress, sleep deprivation, heavy drinking and vitamin B deficiency and taking VIRGIN COCONUT OIL. The dosage can gradually be increased from 2 tablespoons in the morning to a total of 4 or 5 tablespoons daily if tolerated without causing loose stools.

The 9 Points of Dr. Arnold Bresky’s Brain Tune Up System consist of:

1. Fun and Laughter- Dr. Bresky recommends enjoyment and laughter which helps release endorphins in the brain and elevates mood as well as improving the immune system and opening blood vessels in the brain.
2. Relaxation, Meditation and Prayer- Dr. Bresky recommends practicing relaxation, meditation and prayer. Chronic stress shrinks the hippocampus, the area of the brain associated with memory. It also produces cortisol, which blocks glucose from the brain.
3. Music Therapy- Dr. Bresky recommends properly utilized music to enhance the brain’s ability to learn and to improve its state.
4. Sleep- Dr. Bresky recommends 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep for the brain to go into deep REM sleep the period where the brain heals itself and memories form.
5. Physical Exercise- Dr. Bresky recommends physical exercise to improve circulation and proper blood flow to the brain helping cause stem cells in the brain to grow.
6. Mediterranean Diet- Dr. Bresky recommends fresh, seasonal foods that are low in fat and high in omega 3’s and MCT. The Mediterranean diet can lower the risk of serious cognitive impairment by 40%. Omega 3’s help retain myelin brain tissue.
7. Hydration- Dr. Bresky recommends drinking at least six 8 oz. servings of water daily to help flush toxins from body tissues since myelin, a brain tissue, is easily destroyed by a buildup of toxins.
8. Brain Exercises and Art Therapy- Dr. Bresky recommends brain exercises and art to stimulate both hemispheres of the brain.
9. Kindness- Dr. Bresky recommends simple acts of kindness to improve mental outlook and disposition.

In his despair, Chinese doctor Dr.Tom Wu picked up the Bible and prayed to God. Then the Bible fell to the floor, and he read the page it opened to carefully. The chapter talked about the days God created the Earth and everything needed for human beings. Then he created Adam and Eve, and told both of them that plants, vegetables and seeded fruits growing on Earth have been provided for them to eat.

"I thought about what I had eaten in the past - meat, fish, fried and grilled food, sweet cake, but God simply wanted us to eat vegetables and sour fruits. I was confused and doubted whether I would become weak if I ate too many vegetables and less meat," says Dr Wu.

Yet he decided to follow the Bible's guidance. He ate a lot of vegetables and fruits, drank clean water, and completely adjusted his lifestyle - his sleeping, breathing and exercise habits.

He advised people in his family and in the neighborhood about his discovery, and studied natural medicine until he received a doctorate degree in naturopathy and nutrition from the US.

Is coconut oil good for Alzheimer’s?

There are about 5.2 million people in the United States who are afflicted with Alzheimer’s, which is counted as their seventh leading cause of death. The cost of treating Alzheimer’s is estimated at $148 billion annually. Coconut is being studied today for its ketone content because preliminary research appears to suggest that ketones are useful in preventing and in helping cure Alzheimer’s dementia.

It is postulated that “with Alzheimer’s disease, certain brain cells may have difficulty utilizing glucose (made from the carbohydrates we eat), the brain’s principal source of energy. Without fuel, these precious neurons may begin to die. There is an alternative energy source for brain cells—fats known as ketones. If deprived of carbohydrates, the body produces ketones naturally.”

Medium chain triglycerides (MCT), when digested, have been found to be converted by the liver to ketones, the same substance that “provides about 25 percent of the energy newborn babies need to survive.” MCT from coconut oil or palm kernel oil have been reported to have this quality.

Ketones from this MCT seem to help ward off, or even improve dementia. It is suspected that ketones might also help in Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease), drug-resistant epilepsy, brittle type 1 diabetes, and type 2 (insulin-resistant) diabetes.

However, these observations are still too preliminary and still inconclusive. More clinical multi-center, randomized, double-blind investigations are needed to confirm or negate this theory on ketones.for these diseases.

Let’s take a moment to consider what has actually happened to many patients. Synthetic (patentable) Alzheimer’s drugs have failed. A drug company reluctantly decides to put a non-patentable natural substance (medium-chain triglycerides derived from coconut or palm) through an FDA trial. It works. But, darn it, a smart doctor figures out that a natural food can be substituted for the super-expensive drug. Not only that, the ketones from natural coconut oil last in the body longer than the drug version—eight hours instead of three hours. This is enough to make a drug company start worrying about its future. What if this natural health idea really catches on? Goodbye to monopoly profits!

Coconut oil can be found in many health food stores and even some grocery stores. One large chain sells a non-hydrogenated (no trans-fat) brand of coconut oil in a one-liter size (nearly 32 ounces) for about $7.

Coconut oil is not the only natural product that has the potential to turn Alzheimer’s around. We will cover some other ones, and drug industry efforts to steal some of them, in a future issue.

Coconut oil gives hope to Alzheimer's and other dementia sufferers
When someone you love has Alzheimer's or any other form of dementia, you may have been told that there is nothing that can be done.  It is true that manufactured drugs are usually ineffective in treating dementia, often causing worse problems.

But don't give up.
Many patients with various dementia problems have found new clarity of mind simply by changing their diet to include the natural oil of the coconut.  Researchers in the field of nutrition are uncovering startling facts about coconut oil, and dementia sufferers are starting to recover.

If you are looking for help for someone with dementia, or if you are at risk for developing Alzheimer's, coconut oil may be the answer.

Here are the Instructions

Step 1
Check your nearest whole food store or the Internet for organic extra virgin coconut oil.  This will be in solid form below 26 degrees Celsus. (it turns to a liquid oil in a warm house and gets very hard when placed in the refrigerator.)

Step 2
Throw away unhealthy oils
Many of the oils you have been told were healthy could actually hinder recovery.  Canola and other refined oils "have been shown to play a role in the cause of a number of degenerative diseases."  Keep the extra virgin olive oil but do not use it for high heat cooking.  Coconut oil will do the job in a much safer fashion.

Step 3
Starting dose
Most people, especially those accustomed to low fat diets should start  taking the coconut oil gradually, replacing the fat usually consumed as margarine or refined oils with coconut oil, and adding 2 extra  teaspoons in the morning.

Step 4
Gradually increase the dose
The dosage can gradually be increased until 2 tablespoons in the morning and a total of 4 or 5 tablespoons daily is tolerated without causing loose stools.

The oil can be served on bread like butter, warmed and added to hot cereal, eaten right off the spoon (its flavor is delicious), served on vegetables, baked with, or used in any way that oil, animal fats or butter can be used.
